The three cost categories
People cost covers labour - time and wages spent on that customer. External cost covers anything paid to a third party on their behalf - materials, subcontractors, hired equipment. Other cost is a catch-all for anything that doesn't fit either. Revenue is pulled in automatically from what's actually been invoiced to that customer.
Why per-customer, not per-job
Tracking profitability by customer rather than by individual invoice surfaces a pattern a one-off job view would miss - a customer who looks fine on any single job but is quietly unprofitable once every cost across the relationship is counted.
